💥 Baidu launches GPT-4.5 rival at 1% the cost LINK
  • Baidu has introduced two new foundation models, ERNIE 4.5 and ERNIE X1, claiming ERNIE 4.5 is significantly cheaper than OpenAI's GPT-4.5, costing just 1% of its price.
  • ERNIE X1 is designed for advanced reasoning and understanding tasks, excelling in Chinese Q&A, logical reasoning, and complex calculations, while being priced at half the cost of DeepSeek R1.
  • The models are accessible through ERNIE Bot's website, with plans for integration into Baidu's services and availability via APIs on Baidu AI Cloud's platform for developers.
📱 Apple plans to remove ports from iPhones LINK
  • Apple is reportedly planning to introduce the iPhone 17 Air, which may become the company's first port-free smartphone, relying entirely on wireless charging and data syncing through iCloud.
  • This shift to a completely portless design could streamline the device and set a trend for other manufacturers to follow, similar to Apple's past elimination of the headphone jack.
  • Despite considering a portless design, Apple has opted to retain the USB-C port for the iPhone 17 Air to avoid conflicts with European Union regulations, while other models in the 17 lineup are also expected to maintain USB-C connectivity.
🖼️ Google's new AI is really good at watermark removal LINK
  • Social media users have highlighted that Google's new Gemini AI model can erase watermarks from images, including those from well-known stock media companies like Getty Images.
  • The recently expanded Gemini 2.0 Flash model can generate and edit images, easily removing watermarks while filling in any resulting gaps, showcasing its advanced capabilities.
  • Though labeled as experimental and not yet for production, the model's ability to remove watermarks raises concerns about potential copyright violations, as it lacks usage restrictions unlike other AI models.
📡 Alphabet spins off Starlink competitor Taara LINK
  • Taara, a light-based internet project, has spun off from Alphabet's moonshot incubator X to become an independent entity, aiming to compete with Starlink in connecting rural regions.
  • Alphabet will keep a minority stake in Taara, which has also gained investment from Series X Capital, with the company currently operating in 12 countries and employing around two dozen people.
  • Taara's technology transmits data using a narrow light beam between terminals, offering up to 20 gigabits per second over 20 kilometers, and is cheaper and faster to deploy than fiber optics.
🚀 Boeing Starliner astronauts are finally coming home LINK
  • Four astronauts arrived at the International Space Station, allowing Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams to prepare for their return after being in space for over nine months.
  • The NASA and international crew traveled via SpaceX Dragon, which is scheduled to bring Wilmore and Williams back to Earth as early as Tuesday, capitalizing on favorable weather conditions.
  • Originally, Wilmore and Williams were on an eight-day mission that was extended due to problems with the Boeing Starliner, leading NASA to partner with SpaceX for their safe return.
