👥 Facebook returns to its roots LINK
  • Facebook is reviving its original focus with a new "Friends" tab in the US and Canada that shows only content from friends, eliminating algorithmic recommendations that have dominated the main feed.
  • The company acknowledges that while Facebook evolved to create various experiences across different features, the core "magic of friends" element had diminished over time.
  • Users can access this nostalgic feature through the navigation bar in the app, with the option to pin it for easy access as part of Zuckerberg's plan to restore classic Facebook experiences.
💥 OpenAI says ‘our GPUs are melting’ as it limits ChatGPT LINK
  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a temporary rate limit on image generation requests in ChatGPT, stating that "our GPUs are melting" due to overwhelming user demand for the new feature.
  • The artificial intelligence company has already delayed the availability of built-in image generation for free-tier users, as these measures alone weren't sufficient to reduce the strain on their systems.
  • According to Altman, the temporary safeguards will hopefully be lifted soon as OpenAI works to increase processing efficiency, with free users eventually gaining access to generate up to three images daily.
🧠 Anthropic develops an ‘AI microscope’ to reveal how LLMs think LINK
  • Anthropic's "AI microscope" provides insights into Claude 3.5 Haiku's internal processes, revealing the model uses a language-independent internal representation that researchers call a "universal language of thought."
  • The research shows Claude performs multi-step reasoning by activating sequential representations, plans several words ahead when creating poetry, and employs parallel processing paths for mathematical tasks.
  • A complementary study from Google published in Nature Human Behavior found similarities between AI language models and human brain activity during conversation, though fundamental differences in processing architecture remain.
📱 WhatsApp becomes default calling and messaging option for iPhone users LINK
  • WhatsApp's latest iOS update now enables iPhone users to set it as their default app for calls and messages, allowing phone numbers to be automatically dialed through WhatsApp instead of the iOS Phone app.
  • While the option to choose default iOS apps was initially developed to meet European Union requirements, Apple has made this functionality available to all iPhone users worldwide with iOS 18.2.
  • The new default app setting for WhatsApp is currently rolling out to all users, not just beta testers, and requires updating to the latest version available in the App Store.
🇪🇺 EU will go easy with Apple and Facebook LINK
  • The European Union plans minimal fines for Apple and Meta under the Digital Markets Act next week, partly to avoid worsening relations with incoming US President Donald Trump.
  • Apple will face penalties over App Store rules restricting developers from directing users to external offers, while Meta must revise its "pay or consent" model for data tracking.
  • Despite the DMA allowing fines of up to 10 percent of global turnover, the European Commission is pursuing significantly lower penalties as the regulation is new and decisions may face court challenges.
